Get ready folks.  The annual Dean and Deluca Invitational is coming to Colonial.  This is not your Grandfather’s golf tournament and that’s just the way the players and fans like it.

This is what is called the Beer and Barbecue Circuit.  Amateur players arrive in Texas from far and wide to test their skills and party with and against the best players of Texas.

”Henry Cagigal, who won one of the big events, the Center Invitational, in 2003.Cagigal is currently the Golf Pro for Fort Worth, Tx.  Says he used the BBQ circuit as a potential primer for the PGA Tour.  Another person that had success on the BBQ circuit was Mark Brooks, as well as Lindy Miller.  Miller won several times and guys like Dan Blake, Kelly Grunewald, Angus Baker and Dan Davis all had success there.

Besides  Brooks and Miller, those names won’t be recognized outside of Texas, though Charles Coody, Don January, Don Cherry, Miller Barber, Tom Kite, and Ben Crenshaw for sure will be.

All are alumnus of the Beer and Barbeque Circuit. So is Homero Blancas who earned the nickname, “Mr. 55,” on the circuit way before winning Colonial in 1970, Kite and Crenshaw were back-to-back winners of the Firecracker Open in 1968-69.Crenshaw won again in 1971.

Cagigal said, “The barbecue circuit for a lot of people was just to get away, to keep your game sharp, and, for some, to try to scratch out a living.”
