An apartment lifestyle can be seen as convenient at the onset. There are fewer security problems and a more manageable space, mostly applicable for students and people with no plans to raise a family. The apartment space attracts more people who are more active outside the household or those who only require a bed to sleep in at the end of the day.
However, convenience also has its own price. Some problems such as power blackouts and elevator breakdowns are observed frequently. Some buildings, despite their proximity to activity centers such as museums, malls, and groceries, are not that near to schools. The assumption on those living in apartments not wanting to have a family is also not applicable in several areas, as in Australia.
Many neighbor complaints have also been received but were not given proper action. For example, among apartments in Sydney, Australia, there is a reported 33 percent rise in noise complaints in the past year.
Owners Corporation Network executive officer Karen Stiles said, “So if you are someone who enjoys a barbecue for dinner in summer, you need to look at the bylaws very carefully before buying.”
“In America, they call (owners corporations) cooperatives and this is a warning about what people are getting themselves into.It is a cooperative lifestyle, you need to consider your neighbor and live with neighbors that might have different points of view on pets, parking and parties,” she added.
