Eating sweet food has been associated with creating positive feelings, that is why most people resort to eating sweets to somehow alleviate the negative feelings they experience during that time. However, a study suggests that the high intake of too many sweets may result in the complete opposite, which may also increase men’s long-term risk of mental health disorders.
Researchers analyzed data from 10,308 participants, 66.9 percent of whom were men aged between 35 and 55 years old.According to the study, men who had more than 67 grams daily were 23 percent more prone to develop mental disorders five years later, as compared to men who consume 39.5 grams of added sugar or less daily.
Too much sugar consumption is not just only about poor dental health and weight gain.According to researchers, men who consumed more than 67 grams of sugar daily from sweetened foods and beverages were much more likely to develop common mental disorders such as anxiety and depression after five years, compared with men with a lower daily sugar intake.
The recommended amount of added sugar intake daily should make up no more than 10 percent of total daily calories for adults and children, as per the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
