Recently, a plus-sized model encountered a mean passenger in a plane, whom she caught sending mean texts about her. Sadly, this is a reality among plus-sized people -- body-shaming and being called ugly names. As a result, more and more of them lose their self-confidence and eventually shut themselves from the world, even if they just want to be treated just like normal people.
In fashion, some people say skinny jeans are meant to be worn by skinny people. Otherwise, it will be a challenge to pull the look off. However, the truth is even plus size women can look amazing and fashionable in skinny jeans. The key is finding the perfect pair for your body, that will balance your body’s proportion, and compliment your figure more.
Here are some tips to choose the best jeans for your body type that will flatter your curves as well.
1. Choose a dark wash jeans
We all know that dark colored clothing can minimize large body areas, while lighter colored ones can make you look bigger. Jeans with a dark indigo wash or inky black jeans can be worn with any type of outfits or even used for fancier occasions.
2. Experiment on colored denim
While the safest skinny jean you can buy is more on the darker colors, that does not stop you from trying colored jeans. Skip the pastel shades though, and opt for colored denim in rich, saturated hues such as deep burgundy, forest green, or charcoal gray.
3. Be careful with distressed jeans
You may be tempted to buy jeans with too much distressing or whiskering. Doing so may visually enlarge your already-thick legs. You can still wear them though, but buy a pair with fraying that’s focused around the knee area.
4. Take time in skinny-jeans shopping
Be prepared and give yourself time when you go jeans-shopping. Ideally, a good-fitting skinny jean fits snugly through the waist and hips, which does not feel overly tight when standing or sitting, or creating the “muffin top” effect.
Jeans should also flow smoothly over your leg, and lengthen your legs in a way that's super flattering.
For a visible belly, a mid-rise skinny jeans will complement your look and conceal your middle. Avoid high waisted jeans, which visually widen your middle, and low-rise jeans that don’t contain your tummy.
4. Try jeans with stretchy fabric
For plus-size women, jeggings, a.k.a. skinny jeans with Spandex or Lycra fabric can be very flattering. Stretchy jeans are generally more comfortable and flexible to walk, stand and sit in than regular blue jeans, and these cane just be your new favorite pair to wear.
5. Pair your jeans with the right top
Wearing a top with volume is such a great idea for plus-size gals, and also balances out your body's proportions, by drawing attention to your upper half, making your lower half appear slimmer. Also, choose a shirt or blouse that’s long enough to cover your backside, if that gives you more confidence.
6. Wear the right shoes with your jeans
Wear nude-colored heels, or choose shoes that closely match the shade of your jeans, in black or navy. Whether your shoes are heels or flats, you'll want to choose a pointed toe style (rather than rounded toe shoes), to create the most slimming visual effect for legs.
