Finally, the classic Hollywood story of comedienne Lucille Ball and her first husband and co-star Desi Arnaz will finally be brought to the big screen after it was reported that Amazon Studios has acquired the rights to the planned biopic “Lucy and Desi.”

Talks about such a project started two years ago when a number of high-profile names were announced as being involved with a Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz biopic.

The film project will have Aaron Sorkin as screenwriter and two-time Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett (“The Aviator” and “Blue Jasmine”) as the TV legend who became the face of “I Love Lucy.” Escape Artists’ Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch will produce the project.

The biopic will touch on Ball and Arnaz’s 20-year marriage, their time as co-stars on the hit comedy series, and their divorce in 1960 after the show’s end.

The comedic tandem’s children, Lucie Luckinbill née Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr. have also thrown their support behind the authorized retelling of their parents’ love and business story.

Casting the rest of the project has also gained momentum.  Oscar-winner Javier Bardem ("No Country for Old Men") is reportedly being courted to play Ball’s Cuban husband, Desi Arnaz.

So far, no names yet for the parts of the comedy’s characters Fred and Ethel Mertz, which were originally played by actors William Frawley and Vivian Vance.

The popular TV couple’s legacy goes well beyond the “I Love Lucy” fame.  Their production company Desilu Productions also brought about “The Untouchables” and “Star Trek” during their time as the second-largest independent production slate.
