Common Cause of Middle Ear Infection

Ear infections are often caused by a virus or a bacterium within the middle ear. Such infections may lead to other illnesses like allergy, flu or cold, that cause congestion, as well as swelling of the throat, Eustachian tubes, and nasal passages.

If you are new to the Eustachian tubes, these are actually a pair of narrow tubes running from every middle ear to high of the throat’s back, behind your nasal passages. They play a vital role in regulating air pressure in your middle ear.

Proper Middle Ear Infection Diagnosis

Your doctor will carefully look at the eardrum and outer ear with the use of a lighted instrument known as otoscope. This is necessary to check for any fluid, pus, swelling and redness. Make sure that you give your doctor the medical history of the patient to guide them.

In some cases, your physician might also perform a test known as tympanometry to know if your middle ear is still properly working. A device is placed in the ear canal. This is used to make the eardrum vibrate and change the pressure. This test will measure changes in the vibration and then record them on a graph.

Effective Otitis Media Treatment

If an otitis media is determined, there are a few things to consider to treat the infection. These include the likelihood of the patient for having such infection, the severity and type of the problem, how long the infection has lasted and a lot more. Your doctor may prescribe antibiotics. In case the infection has led to speech delay or hearing loss, a surgery might be necessary.
