[Asia News = Reporter Reakkana] VALLEJO, California: Vallejo’s City Council on Tuesday, Jan. 11, elected Filipino American councilor Rozzana Verder-Aliga as vice mayor for a second term, PH Inquirer reported. Verder-Aliga will serve as the city’s vice mayor again in 2022 after the city council voted in favor of her 5-1. She served as vice mayor from January to December 2021. She first served as vice mayor from January to December 2016.

“I was happy about it,” Verder-Aliga told the Times-Herald. “It’s nice to have the majority of confidence from my colleagues. I’m willing to do it and once I was asked there was no hesitation for me to say yes.” The council rotates the position of vice mayor based on the seniority of its members. If two or more members of the council had the same seniority, the council elected the member that received the most votes at the preceding election. If the council chooses not to follow its historical practice it may nominate and elect any council member to serve as Vice Mayor, reported the Times Herald.

Verder-Aliga was originally elected to the council in November 2013 for a two-year seat and reelected in November 2016. She was the first Filipino-American woman elected to public office in Vallejo and Solano County.
